crouton

help

setting crouton up takes a few minutes. here's everything after that.

setting up

  1. sign in with twitch using your own channel's account.
  2. three streams free, with no card. after them, subscribe from your dashboard: Plus at $30 a month, or Starter at $15 if your channel averages under 25 viewers. pricing has the details.
  3. connect your channel. twitch asks you to let crouton hear your follows, subs, raids and ad breaks, and speak in your chat.
  4. CroutonChats joins your chat within a few seconds. it starts in shadow: it writes its lines on your dashboard and says nothing in chat until you turn that on.
  5. try it: “try it in your offline chat” on the dashboard lets it talk for a few minutes while you're offline, so you can hear it before your next stream.

start here, or peek at the dashboard with made-up lines first.

your dashboard

  • lately shows every line it wrote, who it was for and what they'd said. give each one a or a : it leans toward what you liked.
  • live in chat is your switch for its lines going in chat. until you turn it on, it only writes them on the dashboard.
  • pause the bot stops everything at once, and resume brings it back.
  • switches turn each kind of line on or off, and set how often it chimes in. it picks them up within a minute, and !bot on and !bot off in chat change them too.

in chat

you and your mods can type these in your chat. anyone else gets nothing back, except for !lurk, !bot forget me and !bot ignore me, which are everyone's.

  • !botwhat's on and what's off
  • !bot off repliesone kind of line off (or on). !bot off turns everything off at once
  • !bot test raida test line of any kind, to hear one before it counts
  • !so namea shoutout for another streamer
  • !raidmsg channelthe message for chat to copy when you're raiding out
  • !lurkanyone in chat: a send-off while they lurk
  • !bot forget meanyone in chat: it forgets what it knows about them
  • !bot ignore meanyone in chat: it forgets them and leaves them be. !bot ignore me off undoes it

chat can also just talk to it: anyone who tags @CroutonChats, or answers one of its lines with twitch's reply, gets an answer.

the windows app

the app hears your mic, so crouton can answer you out loud: “crouton, how long have i been live?” it turns your voice into text on your own pc, and your audio never leaves it. it's optional: everything in chat works without it.

you'll find the download on your dashboard.

questions

will it spam my chat?
no. it writes on your dashboard until you put it live in chat, then it chimes in on its own every 8 minutes at most (you pick how often), it waits its turn when chat's busy, and every kind of line has a switch. you can pause it from the dashboard any time.
i already have nightbot or streamelements
keep them for your commands and timers. if they also welcome people or thank follows, turn those off there, or chat gets everything twice.
does it know it’s a bot?
yes, and so does your chat: it posts as CroutonChats, with twitch's chat bot badge. the privacy page has a line you can paste so everyone knows it remembers things.
can it see my game?
no. it reads your chat and your channel’s events (follows, raids, subs, ad breaks), and with the windows app it hears your mic. it never reads your game.
can i use my own bot account?
yes. CroutonChats joins by default, and you can connect a twitch account of your own for it to speak as instead.
how do i stop it right now?
press pause on your dashboard, or type !bot off in chat. nothing goes in chat until you turn it back on.
