crouton

what crouton keeps, and what it never does

crouton remembers your chat so it can greet regulars and keep running jokes going. here's exactly what that means, for you and for everyone in your chat.

what it keeps

  • what happened in your channel, chat included: messages, follows, subs, raids and ad breaks. it's deleted after 30 days.
  • who's chatted, and on how many nights, so it knows a first-timer from a regular.
  • a few notes on your regulars and the running jokes that keep coming back, so it can say something true when they show up again.
  • every line it wrote, with your and , so you can see what it said and steer it.

what it never keeps

it never writes down anything private about anyone, even when chat says it out loud:

  • real names
  • ages, or anything about health
  • relationships or family
  • money
  • where anyone lives

and nothing mean. a note that would sting someone if they read it doesn't get kept.

forgetting, or opting out

anyone in chat can type !bot forget me, and crouton wipes what it knows about them, notes and all. the streamer or a mod can do it for someone with !bot forget name. they stay forgotten: later streams don't write about them again.

!bot ignore me goes further: crouton forgets them, keeps nothing they say from then on, and never answers, welcomes or names them in that chat again. !bot ignore me off undoes it.

and when you disconnect crouton from your twitch account, it deletes everything it kept about your channel.

who sees what

  • you see your own channel on your dashboard, signed in with twitch. nobody else can, and you can't see anyone else's.
  • people in your chat never sign in to anything. crouton only knows what they say in your chat.
  • the windows app turns your voice into text on your own pc. your audio never leaves it, and nothing is heard while your mic is muted in obs.
  • crouton never reads your game.

a line for your chat

it's good manners to tell your chat a bot remembers things. paste this into a panel, a pinned message or a !crouton command:

CroutonChats is a bot that helps out in this chat. it remembers regulars and running jokes from one stream to the next, never anything private, and chat logs are deleted after 30 days. type !bot forget me and it forgets you, or !bot ignore me and it leaves you be. more at crouton.chat/privacy

crouton is a bot that keeps a twitch streamer's chat company: it welcomes people, answers chat and remembers regulars from night to night. this page says what it keeps, what it never keeps, how long, and how to make it forget. it's run by Zachary. questions go to support@crouton.chat.

there are two kinds of people here: streamers, who sign up and put crouton in their channel, and viewers, who chat in a channel where crouton runs.

what crouton never keeps

about anyone: relationships, health, age, where someone lives or is from, real names, family, money, contact details, school or work, and nothing mean. this is checked in crouton's code as well as asked of the ai: a note that touches any of it is dropped before it's saved.

viewers: what's kept, and for how long

| what | why | how long | | --- | --- | --- | | chat messages and channel events (follows, subs, gifts, raids, watch streaks) in channels where crouton runs | so its lines fit what's happening, and so "last time on" knows what happened last stream | 30 days, then deleted | | who has chatted: your twitch login, id and display name, the first and last night you chatted, how many nights, and when you followed | so it welcomes you the first time, and says welcome back rather than hello | while the channel uses crouton | | the bot's own lines, with the chat message each one answered | so the streamer can see and rate what it said | while the channel uses crouton | | its memory of you: a few short notes from what you've said in chat, things you asked it to remember ("remember i'm a fox main"), the nights you were there, the last watch streaks you shared, and the channel's inside jokes | so it can greet a regular with something true from a past night | while the channel uses crouton, until you ask it to forget | | what it did when the streamer asked (a timeout, a deleted or pinned message), with your twitch name when it was done to you | so the streamer can see it and undo it | while the channel uses crouton |

making it forget you

type !bot forget me in any channel where crouton runs, or ask the streamer or a mod to type !bot forget <your name>. it deletes what it remembers about you and the streamer's note on you, deletes the chat messages and channel events of yours it's keeping (watch streak shares, follows, subs you gave), takes your name out of its notes on past nights, its inside jokes and the lines it said (and what you'd said that they answered), and keeps you out of its memory from then on (until you ask it to remember something again yourself). to have everything about you deleted, email support@crouton.chat with your twitch name.

leaving you be

type !bot ignore me in a channel where crouton runs, and it leaves you be there: it forgets you the way !bot forget me does, keeps nothing you say or do in that channel from then on (your chat, follows, subs, watch streak shares), and never answers, welcomes, names, thanks or remembers you there again. it says once that it's done. it keeps a note that you asked (your twitch id and name, on that channel's list) so it goes on leaving you be, even if the streamer disconnects crouton and comes back. !bot ignore me off takes you off the list, and it talks to you again.

streamers: what's kept

  • your twitch sign-in: your twitch id, login, display name and profile picture, and your email if twitch shares it.
  • your channel's settings: the switches, how it talks, the notes you write about people, and the inside jokes you give it.
  • twitch's permission for your channel and its bot account, sealed with a key only crouton's server has, so a copy of the database alone can't use them.
  • what it wrote and what it cost: its lines with your ๐Ÿ‘ and ๐Ÿ‘Ž, and what each ai call cost.
  • your plan: the ids stripe gives your customer record and subscription, whether it's active, when it renews, what it costs, and when a payment failed. crouton never sees or keeps your card: stripe (link) does.
  • your channel's size and free streams: the viewer count twitch shows while you're live, read every two minutes and kept as one total a night (for Starter's 30-day average), and which nights were your three free streams.
  • the waitlist: if you put your twitch name down for Growth or Pro on the pricing page, that name and the plan, until the plan launches. ask us and we take it off.
  • the windows app: it turns what you say on your mic into text on your pc, and sends only that text, only while you're live and your mic isn't muted in obs. audio never leaves your pc.
  • actions: when you let it do things (a clip, a timeout), a record of what it did, who asked, and how to undo it.

who else handles it

we don't sell anyone's data, show ads, or use tracking cookies. these services handle it to make crouton work:

  • anthropic writes the bot's lines (claude). each line sends it what that line needs: the recent chat, what happened, and the channel's notes. under its commercial terms, anthropic doesn't train its models on it.
  • supabase is the database and the sign-in, in the united states.
  • railway runs crouton's server, in the united states.
  • vercel serves the website.
  • stripe (as link, the merchant of record) takes payments and keeps payment details under its own privacy policy.
  • twitch is where all of this happens: crouton reads and writes chat through twitch's api, under twitch's rules.

where it lives

in the united states. if you're outside it, your data travels there to be handled as this page says.

your rights

you can ask to see what crouton keeps about you, to correct it, to get a copy, or to delete it: email support@crouton.chat. we answer within 30 days. if you're in the eu or uk, you also have the right to object and to complain to your data protection authority. we keep streamers' data to provide the service they signed up for, and viewers' data because the streamer chose a bot for their chat (our legitimate interest), always within the never-keep list above.

when a streamer leaves

when a streamer disconnects crouton from their twitch account (twitch's settings, under connections), or twitch tells crouton its access to the account has ended, crouton deletes everything it keeps about their channel straight away: its settings, chat and channel events, who's chatted, its lines and their ratings, its memory, the record of what it did, and the windows app's sign-ins. two things stay: the plan, which disconnecting doesn't cancel (cancel it on the dashboard's account page, and stripe keeps what it must for tax and payments), with the free streams it's used and the nightly viewer counts behind its price; and the list of viewers who asked crouton to leave them be, so it still does if the channel comes back. a streamer who'd rather keep crouton connected can ask us to delete their channel instead: we do it within 30 days.

children

crouton isn't meant for anyone under 13, which is also twitch's minimum age.

changes

if this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll update the date at the top and tell streamers on the dashboard.

a line for your chat

streamers, you can paste this in your panels or a command so chat knows:

> this channel uses crouton, a bot that welcomes people and remembers regulars from night to night. it never keeps > private stuff, !bot forget me wipes what it knows about you, and !bot ignore me has it leave you be. > crouton.chat/privacy
